Common Wood Floor Finish Mistakes
Applying finish marks the completion of wood flooring installation. In fact, this is the most tricky phase and it determines the quality you will get in the final end. Below are some common mistakes that most owners and carpenters make.
First Things First
In the course of installing wood flooring, changes could arise in the weather patterns and this could cause the boards to have moulds and crowns. Some people prefer to deal with these damages later after they are done with finish.
This is wrong because finish materials are supposed to dry up together but not at different intervals. Damaged boards should be repaired first and sanded before applying finish on them.
In cases where the job has been contracted to an expert and the owner intends to move in especially if it’s a new home, the contractor may be rushed such that he is made to overlook the general rules that are availed by the manufacturer.
Its better to be behind schedule than to rush and ruin your career. Do not compromise on anything that is against your work ethics.
Use Trusted Brands
When it comes to applying finish such as waxing, do not just use any brand that is the shelves. If you are not sure about a certain brand, you should stick to the one you are familiar with. On the other hand, you can purchase brands that have been recommended by close friends and relatives which is far much better than shopping blindly.
Use the Right Tool for the Right Job
This is actually the most common mistake in most flooring projects. Some people think that they would get the same results when they use finish products that are meant for furniture. Its true that wooden floor and furniture are derived from timber but this does not mean that their finishes can be the same. There are actually different finishing products for each.
Mixing Products
It is not logical to mix different brands of waxing products. This is because each brand has its unique solvent content and in case of any damages, the manufacturer can not be held responsible.
Moreover, the homeowner may not read the manufacturer's instruction on how to go about with the product. This could result in the wrong method of application being used which in return could result in a big mess and wastage of money because the finish would have to be repeated. If you are not sure about the method of application, its advisable to dial the manufacturer's number and get the correct instructions.
Lack of Proper Ventilation
Wooden floors need fresh air just like humans and that is it’s advisable to ensure the rooms are well ventilated. Ventilation allows fresh air to move in and out of the rooms and thus enhances the floors to dry quickly. In homes where ventilation is poor, the finish may take ages to dry possibly due to high levels of humidity. Ventilation can be created by leaving the windows and doors open and lighting the rooms at night. However, caution must be observed because debris might find its way into the room through the doors and might mess with the wax that is still wet.
Lack of Patience
When installing wooden floors, it is important to exercise patience because that is what results in beautiful and durable floorings. If you want to apply more than one layer of wax material, you should give each layer adequate time to dry. Some contractors are fond of making this mistake because all they want is just to finish the job and get the cash. This is ignorance of the highest degree because the homeowner will blame the said expert for poor workmanship in the event that the desired results are not realized.
