Herringbone Flooring

The herringbone pattern, distinguished by its "V" shaped weaving, has graced palaces and homes alike for centuries. Once a symbol of luxury, it's a design that has stood the test of time, proving that some classics never go out of style. At Victorian Designer Floors, we're thrilled to bring you the modern version with our herringbone-engineered flooring.

Few flooring patterns turn heads quite like herringbone. With its interlocking "V" shapes and unmistakable sense of movement, herringbone flooring has been a hallmark of elegant interiors for centuries.

At Victorian Designer Floors, we've spent over 20 years helping Victorians bring this timeless look to life. Whether you're after a classic herringbone wood floor, a low-maintenance herringbone vinyl flooring option, or the refined character of oak herringbone flooring, we'll help you find the right fit for your space, your lifestyle and your budget.

What Is Herringbone Flooring?

Herringbone flooring is a laying pattern in which rectangular planks or blocks are arranged at 90-degree angles to one another, creating a continuous zigzag or "V" effect across the floor. Unlike a straight-laid or chevron pattern, herringbone's staggered joints give it a distinctive woven texture that adds depth, rhythm and a sense of craftsmanship to any room.

Traditionally cut from solid timber, herringbone is now available in a range of modern constructions, including herringbone engineered flooring and vinyl, so you can enjoy the same striking pattern with added stability, easier installation and a lower price point.

Why Choose Herringbone Flooring?

Timeless Style

Herringbone is one of the few patterns that suits both heritage homes and contemporary new builds. It adds instant character and a sense of considered design to living areas, hallways, and entryways.

Durability

Our herringbone engineered flooring pairs a prime-grade oak wear layer with a strong plywood core, giving you the beauty of natural timber with excellent dimensional stability — even in Melbourne's changeable climate.

Budget-Friendly

From premium herringbone wood floor options through to cost-effective herringbone vinyl flooring, there's a herringbone solution to suit almost any project.

Long-Term Value

Herringbone is consistently one of the most requested flooring styles among buyers and renovators, making it a smart investment for homes headed to market.

Where Herringbone Flooring Works Best

Herringbone suits almost any interior, but it truly shines in:

  • Living and dining rooms, where the pattern becomes a natural focal point
  • Entryways and hallways, creating a memorable first impression
  • Open-plan living areas, where the visual movement helps define the space without walls
  • Boutique retail and hospitality fitouts, where premium presentation matters
  • Period and heritage homes, where herringbone echoes traditional parquetry
  • Modern apartments, where herringbone vinyl flooring offers a stylish, low-maintenance alternative to timber

Herringbone Flooring Options at Victorian Designer Floors

Oak Herringbone Flooring

Our most popular option, oak herringbone flooring combines oak's natural strength and grain character with the sophistication of the herringbone pattern. It's a beautiful complement to our broader range of engineered timber flooring

Herringbone Engineered Flooring

Constructed with a genuine timber wear layer bonded to a multi-layer plywood core, engineered herringbone offers superior stability over solid timber, making it well-suited to installation over concrete slabs and in-slab heating.

Herringbone Vinyl Flooring

For busy households, rentals, or commercial spaces that need a hard-wearing, water-resistant option, herringbone vinyl flooring delivers the same eye-catching pattern with exceptional practicality and a friendlier price tag.

Installation and Care

Getting a herringbone floor right comes down to precision. Every plank needs to be perfectly aligned to maintain the pattern's crisp lines, which is why we always recommend professional installation. Our experienced installers use quality timber flooring adhesive and proven techniques to ensure your herringbone floor sits flat, stays stable, and looks flawless for years to come.

Caring for your herringbone flooring is simple:

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit and debris
  • Use a damp (not wet) mop for routine cleaning
  • Use felt pads under furniture to prevent scratching
  • Wipe up spills promptly, particularly on timber and engineered options

Frequently Asked Questions

Is herringbone flooring more expensive to install?

Herringbone typically costs more to install than straight-laid flooring due to the precision cutting and laying involved. However, choosing engineered or vinyl herringbone can bring the overall cost down considerably compared with solid timber.

What's the difference between herringbone and chevron flooring?

Herringbone planks meet at a 90-degree angle, creating a staggered "V" effect, while chevron planks are cut at an angle so they meet in a continuous, unbroken point.

Can herringbone flooring be installed over concrete?

Yes. Our herringbone engineered flooring is well-suited to installation over concrete subfloors using a suitable timber flooring adhesive.

Is herringbone vinyl flooring waterproof?

Most herringbone vinyl flooring is highly water-resistant, making it a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms and busy family homes.

How long does herringbone flooring installation take?

Timeframes vary by room size and subfloor condition, but herringbone generally takes longer to install than standard plank flooring due to the precision required. Our team will provide an accurate timeframe as part of your fixed quote.

Prime Grade
Also known as Select or AB grade is the highest of the three grades of flooring and would usually have the following characteristics: Slight colour variation between the boards and more uniform look except for timbers where variation in colour adds to its beauty and is the main feature of the wood. The grain is straighter than in other grades and sometimes the boards have very few, infrequent small knots unless these are specific to the beauty of the timber. Prime grade wooden floors are the most expensive due to the limited supply in the raw material.
